Today by a vote of 110-62 the House rejected a resolution that would have placed a constitutional amendment on the ballot this fall – an amendment that would have allowed state approved charter schools to receive local taxpayer funding.
For such a constitutional amendment to pass, a two-thirds majority of the House was required totaling 120 votes.
In a statement, PAGE applauded the legislators who opposed HR 1162:
“We want to commend the sixty two House members who stood tall today for Georgia’s public schools and the ninety-four percent of our students who attend them. We hope that they are joined by some of their colleagues should another such vote present itself.”
"House members who voted against the legislation withstood pressure from such interest groups as the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Public Policy Foundation."
